What hair colour should I use, and how do I decide what is right for me?

Natural hair colour ranges from black (level 1) to lightest blonde (level 10). If your hair is not colour treated, you can go up to 2 - 3 levels lighter. If your hair is colour treated, you can stay at the same level or go up to 2 levels darker. Colour cannot lighten previously colour treated hair.

By Tone:
The tone is measured in warm, cool and natural. If you want to add warmth, opt for 'golden' or 'caramel' or ‘red’ tones. To reduce warmth and brassiness, select cooler 'ash' tones. 'Natural' tones are best for grey coverage and provide the most natural-looking result with some soft gold tones.

How long should I leave the permanent hair colour in my hair before rinsing?

If this is your first application of hair colour and is choosing to make your hair colour darker, apply the colour at your scalp area and immediately apply on rest of your hair and let it develop the full 25 minutes. If you are doing a hair colour touch up to roots, let colour develop for 25 minutes. For Resistant grey, leave on for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

How long to wait to colour with Superior Preference after I have relaxed, permed or bleached?

If you have permed or bleached hair, please wait at least 14 days before you apply new hair colour. This gives your hair a rest period between the perm, relaxer or bleach, and the colouring. Be sure to wash and deep condition during this 14 day period. We do not recommend Shade 10 NB or Les Blondissimes on relaxed or bleached hair as discolouring or breakage may occur.

What is the shelf life, expiration of my Superior Preference hair colour?

Superior Preference products have been tested to have at least a 3-year shelf life if unopened and stored at normal room temperature. If your product looks and smells the way it normally does, it is good to use. If the colourant is almost black or very dark and you cannot see through it, discard and call the consumer care centre. The CCC number is located on the side panel of the carton.

How do I go from being darker to lighter?

Hair dye cannot predictably lighten another colour. If you give yourself 4-6 weeks in between your colour, you can apply the lighter shade as a root application and let the colour of your ends soften more naturally. As they get lighter you can change your shade and only apply the new colour to the ends for a few minutes so they do not get too dark.

What is the difference between Superior Preference and Excellence Crème?

Excellence has more of opaque grey coverage. If you are noticing that the Preference is not covering your stubborn greys well enough, then you might want to switch to the Excellence Crème.

How can I bleach my hair at home?

Bleaching all over at home? Try Feria Absolute Platinum. It is an ammonia-free on scalp bleach. Superior Preference does not have a bleaching offering.

How can I try Balayage at home?

Balayage is a technique where the lightened bleach is mostly applied to the mid lengths and ends, less around the scalp or root area. This can be done with any highlight kit, just concentrate on applying the bleach/lightener away from the top of your hair.
How can I get Ombre hair at home?

Ombre is lightened ends, but with a more deliberate line of where the bleach/lightener begins, not as diffused as a balayage. With ombre, you can have a strong straight line in your hair or you can create a softer transition by taking some bigger pieces of your hair and lightening them. We recommend you use the Feria Ombre Kit.

How do I get highlights with Preference?

You can highlight with Preference by mixing the colour and selecting some strands to lighten. It is more successful if you have no colour on your hair. Pick a shade that is at least 2 levels lighter than hair colour to create the highlights. If you colour your hair and you like it, use a shade of that is 2 levels darker to create contrast, similar to low light.
